83. Gas and Electric Lighting.-The number of electric street lamps in use at the end of the year was 471, an increase of 19 over the previous year.

84. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages. Following the typhoons, repairs of varying magnitude were carried out to the following buildings:-Lai Chi Kok Prison, Kowloon City Bath- house, and Sham Shui Po Police Station. Damage to the Tai Kok Tsui-Stonecutters submarine cable was made good at a cost of $867.60. Repairs were carried out to the Kowloon City Ferry Pier after the typhoon which occurred in September.

85. Maintenance of Water Works, Lai Chi Kok.-The total quantity of water supplied during the year was 101.49 million gallons, shewing an increase of 2.73 million gallons on 1932 and an average consumption of 278,000 gallons per day. Details of consumption are given in Table VIII.

86. Water Meters.-There were 27 meters in use at the close of the year compared with twenty-six in 1932. The number of meters examined and repaired during the year was 35.

87. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers.-The Praya Walls and Piers were inaintained in a satisfactory condition throughout the year. Minor repairs were effected to the following works:-Kowloon City and Shamshuipo Piers, and Water Boat Dock at Laichikok. 10 reinforced concrete piles were manufac- tured for the strengthening of Kowloon City Ferry Pier.

88. Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries.-Work carried out under this head is alluded to in paragraph 31 of this Report.

NEW TERRITORIES.

89. Maintenance of Buildings.--Government buildings were kept in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and re- pairs in accordance with the recurring programme were carried out to 14 buildings. Major repairs included:--Ta Ku Ling Police Station--renewal of flag mast and alterations to Lewis Gun tower, Tsun Wan Police Station-cement concrete water tanks, Au Tau Police Station-fly proof frames to Charge Room, Lok Ma Chau Police Station--repairs to cement concrete pathway to parade ground, Au Tau Magnetic Hut-provision of additional insulation, rearrangement of instrument stands and new door, Cheung Chau Police Station-new windows, Po Chu Tam Police Station- alterations and additions, Fanling Revenue Quarters-provision of mosquito frames and wash basins.

Repairs due to white ant damage were carried out at the following buildings:-Tai Po Police Station, Tai Po Island Quar- ters, Rennie's Mills, Sheung Shui Police Station and Sha Tau Kok Police Station.

The electrical installations were maintained in good order. Two ceiling fans were installed at Taipo Land Office.

The electrical installations in fifteen Government buildings were tested and repaired and seventeen inventories of Electrical Fittings issued and revised. European Revenue Officers' Quarters at Fanling were wired for electric light and power: total number of points thirty. Three additional lights were installed at Au Tau Magnetic Hut and the wiring of the heating elements was re- arranged to conform to structural alterations.

90. Improvements to Buildings-New Territories. The prin- cipal improvements under this head were as follows:--Tai O Police Station-construction of a cement concrete staircase, Sha Tau Kok Police Station-provision of a concrete path from Station to Indian Quarters, Lok Ma Chau Police Station-altera- tions to verandahs, Tai Po Clerks' Quarters-wrought iron grilles to first floor of all Quarters, Tsun Wan Police Station-screens to Indian Quarters, Green Island Police Station-construction of cement concrete channelling and surfacing, Un Long Dispensary -alterations and additions. Three typhoon signal lanterns and six additional lights were installed at Cheung Chau Police Station and Sheung Shui Police Station. Two ceiling fans and one bell were installed at Taipo Land Office and Sai Kung Police Station. Un Long Dispensary was wired for electric light, fans and power: total number of points forty-seven.
